  • This is the most powerful charger I've come across. Yes, it takes a long time to charge, yet it will charge an iPad Air from 5% to 80% using only about ⅓ rd the charge, and it will do it while you're using it. I fly over Afganistan on long helicopter missions, at low and hight levels above the ground. My navigation app is a must and after hours in the air, fuel stops and not so public landings it starts to run short of power. I know, no matter how low the battery, as soon as I plug in the Anker Astro (Anker Astro? Really) it will keep running and even begin to charge. It's a security blanket I could not live without...maybe literally.

Customer FAQ

Q1.  Can I use USB cables other than those provided with my Anker external battery?
To ensure complete safety and best performance, we strongly recommend using your device’s original cable, a third-party certified cable (such as MFI) or our included cable.
Q2.  Does it work with the new iPhone 5s, 5c?
Yes. But the Apple connector is not included. Please use your device's original cable.
Q3.  Anker external batteries' efficiency.
ALL external batteries lose power due to voltage conversion and circuit resistance.

Approximately 20% of Astro 2nd Generation external battery’s total capacity is consumed, including power lost from circuit heat and voltage conversion within the external battery (approximately 6%) and the charging cable and your device (approximately 14%). This efficiency rate is 15% higher than the industry average of 35%.

Older Astro batteries have lose approximately 30%.

According to industrial standards, all external batteries are labeled based on their raw cells capacity not efficiency. Like others, we are following this standard.
Q4.  How long will the battery lasts while not in use?
Generally, most of our external batteries' static power consumption is lower than 100uA, which will take between 3.5 and 20 years to drain the battery completely.

However, the chemicals within the li-ion battery will gradually become less active over prolonged periods without use. Most will die in 2 years of inactivity.

To extend your battery's life:
1. Charge and recharge it at least once every 3-4 months.
2. Do not over-charge or over-discharge it. It is best to keep it charged between 5%-95%.
Q5.  Can Anker external batteries be used for international travel?
Yes. Be sure the USB adapter you bring with is compatible with the voltage of the country you will be traveling to. An adapter's voltage input is usually printed on the adapter.
Q6.  Can external batteries be taken on board airplanes?
Yes, all Anker external batteries can legally and safely be taken on board airplanes. Here are the relevant requirements:

Quoted from Federal transportation security rules (Effective January 1, 2008):
Lithium ion batteries (a.k.a.: rechargeable lithium, lithium polymer, LIPO, secondary lithium).
-Passengers may carry consumer-sized lithium ion batteries [no more than 8 grams of equivalent lithium content or 100 watt hours (wh) per battery]. This size covers AA, AAA, 9-volt, cell phone, PDA, camera, camcorder, Gameboy, and standard laptop computer batteries.
-Passengers can also bring two (2) larger lithium ion batteries (more than 8 grams, up to 25 grams of equivalent lithium content per battery) in their carry-on. This size covers larger extended-life laptop batteries. Most consumer lithium ion batteries are below this size.

Anker's largest external battery is currently the Anker Pro 20000mAh (74 wh) which is lower than the above 100 wh limit.
Q7.  What can I do if I lose the provided accessories?
Please check to see if you have extras or contact us via email at support@ianker.com for help.
Q8.  Anker external batteries' compatibility
Anker external batteries are compatible with Android and Apple smartphones and tablets except Asus devices (Apple connectors are not included, please use your devices original cable).
Q9.  Can it be charged and charge other devices at the same time?
Yes, this battery can simultaneously charge and discharge. However, constant pass-through charging may affect the battery’s lifespan.
Q10.  Do I need to press the power button when charging other devices?
Yes.
Q11.  Do I need a certain type of charger to recharge this Anker external battery?
No, most USB AC chargers or a laptop or PC's USB port can recharge this battery. A minority of USB AC adapters are not compatible. If you find your charger is not working, please try a different charging option.
Q12.  How long does it take to fully charge this Anker external battery?
9-10 hours with a 1.5A output charger. Using a charger with a lower current output will prolong the charge time.
Q13.  How to turn the flashlight on and off?
Please press the power button twice to turn the flashlight on or off.
Q14.  Can I charge two devices at the same time?
Yes. But please note that when using 2 output ports simultaneously, the total output current will not exceed 3A.
Q15.  Can it charge Samsung or Asus tablets?
No.
Q16.  What if the Astro E5 fails to recharge?
a. Check that the adapter is connected securely, or replace it if the current one is not functioning normally.
b. Check that the USB cable is connected securely, or replace it if the current one is not functioning normally.
c. Please email us at support@ianker.com duiring your 18-month warranty period if the provided acessories or the external battery have problems.

b. Check that the Astro E5 still holds a charge, and recharge it when the remaining power is low.

Possibly faulty production lot?
I started having problems with my E5 in the last couple of weeks.  I just sent an email to tech support, but then looked at the reviews here after I did that.  I notice that very recently there have been multiple questions of a similar issue.  I can only wonder if maybe there was a bad production lot that is now showing it's face.  I trust that Anker customer support will come through in a timely and acceptable fashion given the obvious issue here, which is why I paid a premium for this device over others on the market in the first place.

If you're using a 5V/1.5A charger and you've tried with different cables and still can't get it to fully charge then it could indicate a fault.

Please give our customer service guys a shout at support@ianker.com and they'll be able to help you further.

compatibility issue
Please tell me if Anker Astro E5 15000 mAh External Battery can be used to power the Panasonic HC-V550K Full HD Wifi Enabled 50X stable zoom camcorder which is powered by Panasonic battery pack VW-VBT 190 -1940mAh. Can this Anker Astro E5 be charged with the power supply, 3.6V battery/5.0V AC Adapter that came with the Panasonic HC-V550K camcorder? Is there a power supply AC adapter to charge specifically the Anker  Astro E5?

We usually suggest that if a device can be charged by your computer's USB port then it should work fine withe Astro.

The AC adapter (if it has a USB output) should charge the Astro fine.

Poor Product Support
I have sent two emails to Anker in regard to lengthy charging times (53 hours), and I have not hear a word from them. I have used two different chargers, but the results are the same.  The device was purchased in march ot this year.I will think twice before ordering another Anker product.

Sorry to hear you haven't received any response to emails to us, what is the ticket number that you were given in the automated acknowledgement emails?

Are the chargers you're using capable of outputting 5V/1.5A and have you tried with a different cable?

Anker do a wall charger,  the battery has a 1.5amp input,  in order to charge the unit quickly,  the charger needs to be able to supply 1.5amp, the Anker chargers can supply 2.4 amp. The battery will only take the amps it needs,  so have a look at the Anker wall charger

The wall charger you need should be capable of outputting 5V/1.5A.

Currently in the UK we only have stock for our 5 port chargers, they do have Power IQ installed though which means they'll charge any of your devices at full speed.

You'd just need to search on Amazon for 'Anker 25W Wall Charger' or 'Anker 40W Wall Charger'.

If you've tried using a different Micro USB cable and the E5 is charging up OK then this would indicate a fault with the cable, in which case we'd be more than happy to get you a replacement sent out.

Give our CS guys a shout at support@ianker.com and let them know the situation. They'll help you out.

Hi,I have tested my battery with another functional Micro USB, it did not work. I have also connected my Micro USB to my friend's external battery(anker), it worked. After that cross check, it was cleared up that the problem is originating from the battery itself. Could you please give me en advice to find a technical service in Turkey in order for me to keep in touch with them and send the battery for repair. Thank you.
